Chapter Eight

Terror had Jessie on edge. He could hold his own in a bar fight, but he sure as hell wasn't a trained fighter like some of these other guys were. So far he'd managed to take down a couple. He'd glanced over at Kit early to see her kicking everyone's butt so he focused back on his own issues.

Suddenly pain gripped his heart hard, similar to what he'd felt when he'd found his mother lying dead in her bed. Certain the emotion was coming from Kit, he turned to look for her. Kit was holding herself rigid as Triggers pinned her back while others beat her. Without conscious decision, he roared and shifted. As the blue light cleared from his vision, he found two Triggers in front of him. Desperation gave him strength and he lunged at the men. He gripped one around the biceps with his claws as he bit into his shoulder. In one smooth move, he pulled his hind legs up and kicked into the guy's middle, tearing flesh free with his two-inch long claws. He allowed the dead man to drop to the ground as the other Trigger attempted to get him in a headlock. Didn't the guy know how strong snow leopards were? Idiot. With ease he swiped out a paw and clawed the side of his face. With a scream, he pulled away from Jessie while clutching at his bleeding face. Yeah, that’s going to leave a scar.

With that dealt with, he turned back to Kit just in time to see another leopard go to her aid. It pulled the man off her back by the throat and lunged for the next one. Jessie raced over to help and was still feet away when one of the men buried a blade in the leopard's shoulder. The animal howled and fell to the ground allowing Jessie space to jump over it with a roar. He landed at the same time as another larger leopard joined him, roaring loud enough that Jessie felt it vibrate through the earth. The few remaining Triggers turned tail and ran at the sound. Jessie went to give chase but was stopped by Jake's voice in his head.

No Jessie. Not today. Our wounded need to be taken care of first. Sophie is going to need to go to hospital with that knife wound.

Oh shit. That was Sophie who had protected Kit? Jessie made his way back to Kit's side. She knelt on the ground silently staring off into the bush where the Triggers had gone. Her complete stillness scared him. The only movement was her chest rising and falling to breathe. Jessie returned to human form and was tossed a pair of jeans by another of the men.

"We all keep a spare set or two in our cars. Never know when you're gonna shift and shred your clothes."

"Good move. Thanks."

With his heart in his throat, he quickly dressed before he dropped to his knees in front of Kit and held her face in his palms.
